Soft Pastel

Working with Soft Pastel

Soft pastel as a medium is very direct and versatile to work with.

It is also a very "forgiving" Medium, that allow us to make mistakes and learn from them..

Working with soft pastel, is working with layer on a toned pastel-mat.

There are great pastel surfaces to choose from, including sanded ones that are lovely surfaces to work with, as we can work with many layers.

What is art?

And what are you going to learn in the classes?

So why art?

Any kind of art in its purest form – whether it's music, dance or fine art - is a form of expression from the soul. And, just like any other abstract feeling or concept (love or beauty for example) we find that it is almost impossible to do so in words.

As I see it, art is a way to express something that goes beyond words - our unity with the beauty of nature, the sensation of harmony, feelings of love or simply when we look at a landscape or a flower and connect to it in a deep way.

Art allows us to get to know the essence of the subject we are exploring - be it a landscape, a still life or the human figure. We can only know something truly when we approach it with awareness, when we learn to look with full attention.

Art is a tool that helps develop our ability to see clearly and focus our attention – and we are rewarded with a deep gratitude for life.

Fine art and visual art as a whole, is a high form of connecting to the principles that exist in our universe.

While scientists approach these principles through a study of the laws of physics, in search of the truth, art is a process of learning, exploring and becoming familiar with the principles of harmony and beauty, proportions and the harmony between colours - the essence of those principles that already exist in nature. We just need to rediscover them and they are revealed to us through art.

Studying art – learning from art

As an artist and an art tutor for many years, I have always been fascinated by these aesthetic principles and I will always feel a continuous desire to learn from observation, from nature.

When studying art, beyond a study of the Old Masters, the most fascinating and joyful experience is to discover the new – what is new and best for you.

In this way, art will always present you with an exciting new challenge – always to evolve, to find new creative ways of looking at a subject, even if that subject is something that you have seen millions of times before.

Through art you learn to develop fresh eyes, each and every time.

Through art we discover a rich world in the stillness of simply observing, a rich world of values, endless variety of colours and shapes in nature that coexist in perfect order and harmony, in unity and inter-connectivity.

Art is here to teach us about the harmony that exists in the universe. And the more progress we make, the more we learn to simplify, to see the unity and vastness with more clarity.

Art lessons

In our art classes we learn about colours and the way they relate to one other in harmonious ways; we explore how light behaves on a form; we learn about the importance of values in a painting, the composition, the proportions and the relations between objects. We also learn to work with different materials.

Knowledge gives us the confidence to enjoy creating art - the more we study, the more we discover along the way.

Art can be taught and a good teacher can make the way easier by allowing us to develop our skills more rapidly. Yet it is always up to us how much we practise: art like anything else requires practice.
